Gregory J. Hughes

Gregory J. Hughes is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He holds a Pharm.D. from St. John’s University (2008) and completed a post-graduate Pharmacy Practice Residency at the St. Louis VA Medical Center. Dr. Hughes specializes in clinical pharmacy education, geriatric pharmacotherapy, and anticoagulation management. His research focuses on internal medicine, cardiology, and nephrology, with a particular emphasis on drug therapy optimization in complex populations such as the elderly and patients with chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Hughes is actively involved in teaching pharmacotherapy, clinical pharmacokinetics, and evidence-based medicine to pharmacy and medical students. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including works on anticoagulant reversal strategies, nephropathy treatment, and geriatric drug dosing considerations. His edited book A Medication Guide to Internal Medicine Tests and Procedures (2021) serves as a critical resource for clinicians.

As a clinical pharmacy preceptor at North Shore University Hospital, he provides pharmacotherapy expertise to the Internal Medicine service and collaborates on improving medication safety and efficacy across healthcare settings. His contributions to the field include advancing clinical guidelines for managing multidrug-resistant infections, optimizing anticoagulant therapy, and refining curricula for pharmacy education.
