Gregory Grobis serves as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences (CHASS) at University of Detroit Mercy, overseeing initiatives in diversity, equity, inclusion, and adult learning. He holds an Associate Professor rank in the Department of Performing Arts, teaching courses like Theatre for Social Change and Arts Management. His academic leadership includes chairing the Performing Arts Department (2018–2023) and serving on committees such as the UDM Professor Union negotiating team.
Education:
- M.F.A. in Performing Arts from Wayne State University
- B.A. in Performing Arts from Bethel College
Research & Creative Work: Grobis has directed over 125 theater productions, including Evil Dead: The Musical (2020 Wilde Award for Best Supporting Actress) and The Whale (2016 Wilde Award for Best Actor). His scholarship focuses on theatre as a tool for social justice, audience engagement strategies, and interdisciplinary arts leadership. He has presented at multiple Association of Theatre in Higher Education conferences and published Speaking of Justice in Conversations Magazine (2013).
Grants: Secured over $87,000 in grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and others for projects like the Low Hanging Fruit Project (2016) and American Privilege (2018). Also led the Jordan Anderson Writes A Letter project with multiple grants (2014).
Labs/Teams: Manages the Detroit Mercy Theatre Company (DMTC), mentoring students in theatre production and performance. His work integrates community engagement and mission-driven programming across academic and professional stages.
