Karen Sheridan is a Professor of Theatre at Oakland University's School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where she has been a faculty member since 1991. She co-founded the Classical Theatre Study in Greece program and maintains an active presence in Detroit's professional theatre scene.
Her educational background includes:
- MFA in Acting from DePaul University
- BA in Theatre from Loyola University Chicago
Professor Sheridan's research and artistic practice centers on Classical Greek Theatre and Shakespearean performance. She has directed over 90 productions including adaptations of Greek tragedies she authored (Medea, Antigone, Iphigenia), while pioneering inclusive theatre through a 23-year partnership with Synergy on Stage for Deaf-accessible performances.
Her distinguished awards include:
- Detroit Free Press Best Supporting Actress Award for Dancing at Lughnasa
- 2019 Wilde and Pulsar Awards for Silent Sky
- Monica E. Emerson Diversity Award for inclusive theatre practices
As co-founder of Oakland's Greece program, she leads student productions on Greek islands and campus. She maintains active professional engagement through Actors' Equity Association work and ongoing studies with Shakespeare & Company.
