Jeremy Barnett is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre at Oakland University's School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where he has taught since 2011. He holds an MFA in Scenic Design from Boston University and a BFA in Drama from Carnegie Mellon University, with additional studies in photography and interior design at the School Art Centers International in Florence, Italy, and stone sculpture at the Tengenenge Artist Village in Zimbabwe.
Research Focus: Barnett specializes in innovative scenic design for theatre, opera, and dance, with particular expertise in site-specific installations within non-traditional venues (e.g., repurposed buildings, outdoor spaces, art galleries). His practice integrates public art creation including murals, sculptures, and international exhibitions. Key research areas explore the intersection of spatial design, community engagement, and visual narrative in performative environments.
Achievements:
- Broadway World Detroit Award for Best Scenic Design
- Encore Michigan Wilde Award for Best Set Design
- International exhibitions in Thailand and Spain
- 15-year residency with Revels, Inc. (Cambridge)
Projects & Grants: Secured Kresge Foundation funding for productions including Freedom School (community performance ritual) and Carmen (operatic adaptation). Founding member of Marblehead Public Arts Committee, directing collaborative art initiatives across public spaces.
