Gregor Meinecke

Gregor Meinecke is a PhD student at Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and the University of Hamburg, and serves as an Associate Scholar at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz. His research focuses on script and pseudoscript bearers in Renaissance sacred art, examining their legibility, materiality, and interaction with viewers. He previously completed his M.A. in Art History at the University of Hamburg in 2022, with a thesis on books in Quattrocento paintings.

His academic work includes case studies on Latin script in Filippino Lippi’s works, Hebrew inscriptions in Botticelli and Bellini’s paintings, and pseudoscript in Crivelli’s art. He investigates how script functions in Renaissance art through viewer engagement, oscillating between reading and deciphering. His research is supported by fellowships and collaborations with institutions like the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz.
