Greg Yaxley is a Professor of Experimental Petrology at the Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University. He specializes in high-pressure experimental studies of mantle processes, focusing on carbonatite magmatism, mantle metasomatism, and critical metal deposits. His affiliations include the Geochemistry Research Area and the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre in Critical Resources.
- PhD from ANU
- 2014-present: Professor at ANU
- 2021: Fellow of the Geological Society of Australia
- 2021-2024: Head of Geochemistry Research Area
Research explores: 1) formation of carbonatites and associated critical metal deposits, 2) volatile behavior in mantle systems, and 3) diamond indicator minerals. Techniques include piston-cylinder/multi-anvil experiments combined with synchrotron spectroscopy.
Recent work highlights: 1) kimberlite ascent mechanisms via carbonate-silicate immiscibility, 2) mantle metasomatism timescales via garnet diffusion, and 3) deep mantle carbon cycling through subduction zones.
- Key awards: ARC Future Fellowship (2010-2013), Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (1999)
Supervises PhD students in critical minerals and mantle processes. Collaborates with global institutions including Frankfurt University and the Geological Survey of Australia.
