Metcalf’s research adopts cross-cultural and cross-medial perspectives, analyzing paintings as film, television as literature, and commercial/fine art interchangeably. His publications explore topics like The DVD Novel (2012), which traces storytelling evolution in television through DVD accessibility, and essays on Mary Cassatt, Andy Warhol, and comic book narratives.
His work bridges film analysis, television history, and visual culture, with a focus on narrative adaptation across media. Metcalf also creates ritual objects for contemporary American culture, exhibited globally in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Current projects include cinematic reinterpretations of Mary Cassatt’s themes and the collapse of narrative in film.
