Greg Burris is an Associate Professor in Residence in the Communication Program at Northwestern University in Qatar. He holds a PhD in Film and Media Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), alongside degrees from Indiana University and the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on the intersections of cinema, race, and emancipatory politics, with a particular emphasis on Middle Eastern and Palestinian media.
Dr. Burris has held notable roles, including directing the Media Studies Program at the American University of Beirut and serving as a research fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study (STIAS) and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS). He is the author of The Palestinian Idea: Film, Media, and the Radical Imagination (2019) and has contributed to journals like Cinema Journal, Middle East Eye, and anthologies such as Futures of Black Radicalism and Reel Gender. His current work explores Palestine and the 'battlefield of time.'
He has received prestigious recognition, including the Fulbright Fellowship and research fellowships at STIAS and NIAS. His affiliations include the Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South at Northwestern University in Qatar, where he engages in interdisciplinary research on migration, conflict, and media literacy in the MENA region.
