Greg Bottoms is a Professor of Creative Writing in the Department of English at the University of Vermont. He joined the faculty in 2003 as the first specialist in creative nonfiction. His work bridges memoir, literary journalism, and experimental prose. Bottoms holds an MFA from the University of Virginia (1996-98) as a Henry Hoyns Fellow.
Research interests focus on genre-blurring narratives, cultural criticism, and the intersection of art, faith, and social marginality. His acclaimed works include Angelhead, The Colorful Apocalypse, and Fight Scenes, which explore themes like mental health, regional identity, and outsider art.
Awards include the Dean’s Lecture Award (2015), Esquire’s 'Book of the Year' (2000), and multiple fellowships. His writing appears in Agni, The Believer, and Oxford American.
Teaching emphasizes craft mastery through courses like 'Memoir Workshop' and 'Literary Journalism.' Bottoms advocates for humility in writing and the ethical role of literary art in conveying human truths.
