Grant Mathews is a Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on the origin and evolution of matter in the universe, including dark energy, dark matter, and nucleosynthesis processes. He has held distinguished visiting professorships at institutions including the University of Chicago, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, and Beihang University. Mathews earned his B.S. from Michigan State University (1972) and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (1977). His work encompasses relativistic hydrodynamics, stellar evolution, and cosmological structure formation, with notable contributions to supernova models, neutron star mergers, and the ν-process. He has received awards such as the American Physical Society Fellowship and LLNL’s Outstanding Scientific Publication Award.
Research interests include dark matter/dark energy constraints, r-process nucleosynthesis in supernovae, and the interplay between nuclear physics and astrophysical phenomena. His recent studies explore gravitational wave signatures from binary neutron star mergers, primordial black hole formation, and galactic chemical evolution.
