معرفی
Ilya Mandel is a Professor at Monash University's School of Physics and Astronomy, previously holding a Professorship in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Birmingham (2011–2019). He specializes in gravitational-wave astrophysics, stellar binary evolution, and high-energy transients. Mandel completed his PhD at the California Institute of Technology in 2008 under Kip Thorne, followed by postdoctoral research at Northwestern University and MIT as an NSF Fellow.
His research focuses on gravitational-wave sources, data analysis for detectors like LIGO/Virgo, and astrophysics of compact-object binaries. Key projects include the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Physics and the Legacy Survey for Space and Time (LSST). He has led studies on binary black hole mergers, neutron star mergers, and the role of common envelope phases in stellar evolution.
Recent work emphasizes the BLOeM survey of massive stars in low-metallicity environments, constraints on neutron star natal kicks, and multi-messenger observations of supernovae and tidal disruption events. Mandel has published over 230 papers, with notable contributions to understanding r-process nucleosynthesis in compact object mergers and interpreting gravitational-wave signals.
He actively mentors PhD students in gravitational-wave astrophysics, massive binary evolution, and astrostatistics. His funding includes major Australian Research Council grants and collaborative projects with international institutions.
