Yuri Levin is a Professor of Physics at Columbia University's Department of Physics. His research focuses on astrophysics, gravitational waves, and cosmology, including studies of neutron star dynamics, galactic nuclei, and cosmic strings. He received his Ph.D. from Caltech under advisors Kip Thorne and Vladimir Braginsky, and has held academic positions at Berkeley, Toronto, Leiden, and Melbourne before joining Columbia in 2017. His work involves theoretical astrophysics topics like superfluid vortices in neutron stars, pulsar glitches, and gravitational wave emission from cosmic defects.
Levin's research interests include: stellar/gas dynamics in galactic nuclei; superfluid vortex motion in neutron stars and pulsar glitches; neutron star quakes and magneto-dynamics; and gravitational waves from cosmic strings. He has contributed to gravitational wave detection efforts using LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA observatories, with recent publications analyzing signals from binary mergers, fast radio bursts, and supernova events.
While no specific scientific awards are listed, his extensive publication record reflects recognition in the field. Teaching includes courses like Astrophysics I and General Relativity. Current projects involve exploring gravitational wave signatures of cosmic strings and optimizing revenue management strategies for resorts through data analytics.
