Professor Graham Stewart is the Interim Head of Microbial and Cellular Sciences at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He holds a PhD from Imperial College London (1993) and specializes in Molecular Bacteriology, focusing on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and leprosy. His research explores bacterial evolution, genetic resistance patterns, and the persistence of ancient pathogens in modern contexts.
Research highlights include co-authoring a groundbreaking 2013 study revealing Mycobacterium leprae's genomic stability over millennia through medieval skeletal analysis. His work addresses public health challenges like drug resistance and environmental reservoirs of pathogens.
Dr. Stewart contributes to interdisciplinary discussions on disease susceptibility, urbanization impacts on pathogen prevalence, and evolutionary genetics. He is affiliated with The Conversation as an author and serves on academic committees including the Board of Examinations.
