Graham Smart is a Professor at Carleton University's School of Linguistics and Language Studies, where he has taught since 2004. Prior to academia, he worked as a writing consultant at the Bank of Canada, conducting ethnographic research on organizational knowledge-building. His research focuses on writing in academic/workplace settings, genre theory, environmental discourse, and the socio-discursive dimensions of climate change debates.

Research interests include interpretive ethnography, genre analysis, and the intersection of environmental discourse with educational materials. He has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications, including the book Writing the Economy: Activity, Genre and Technology in the World of Banking (2006).
Key awards include nominations for Outstanding Graduate Mentor (2013), a keynote speaking role at major conferences (2010, 2013), and international visiting professorships in China (2009–2012). His recent work examines climate change argumentation in cultural communities and environmental discourse in Brazilian EFL textbooks.
