معرفی
Graham John Hutchings is a Distinguished Professor of Physical Chemistry at the School of Chemistry, Cardiff University, where he has been Head of School (1997–2006), Director of the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (2008–present), and Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research (2010–2012). He previously held academic roles at the University of Liverpool (1987–1997) and the University of the Witwatersrand (1984–1987). His career spans both industrial research (ICI, AECI Ltd) and academic leadership, establishing Cardiff's chemistry department as Wales' premier institution.
- Education:
- BSc, University College London (1972)
- PhD in Biological Chemistry, University College London (1975)
Research interests focus on heterogeneous catalysis, particularly:
- Catalytic applications of gold, including selective oxidation of hydrogen and bio-renewables
- Mechanistic studies of C1 chemistry (e.g., Fischer-Tropsch, methane coupling)
- Enantioselective catalysis via electrostatic immobilization of metal complexes
- Amorphous vanadium phosphates for alkane oxidation
- Gas-solid interface catalysis without solvents
His work combines in situ spectroscopy, reactor studies, and industrial partnerships (e.g., Johnson Matthey, BP, Sasol). He pioneered the prediction of gold's catalytic activity (1985) and demonstrated enantioselective reactions at gas-solid interfaces.
Scientific awards and honors:
- Fellow of the Royal Society (2009)
- RSC Davy Medal (2013)
- Faraday Lectureship Prize (2018)
- Multiple industry and society awards spanning 1972–2018
He has supervised over 150 PhD students and 120 postdocs, led EU projects (Auricat), and chaired the Journal of Catalysis editorial board since 1999.
