Graeme Smith is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen’s University, cross-appointed to the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences. He directs the Queen’s University Perinatal Research Unit and the Clinical Investigator Program for the School of Medicine.
His research focuses on adverse obstetrical events as markers of future cardiovascular disease, particularly pre-eclampsia. He developed the MotHERS Program for maternal health screening and investigates molecular mechanisms of pre-eclampsia, including carbon monoxide’s role in utero-placental health. Current projects involve proteomic and miRNA analyses in postpartum women.
Dr. Smith has secured funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and Physicians’ Services Inc. His lab includes clinical researchers like Jessica Pudwell and basic science staff like Nichole Peterson. Former students include Karalyn McRae and Tracey Weissgerber.
