As an adult Infectious Diseases Specialist, he leads an internationally recognized research program focused on advanced HIV disease complications.
His primary research investigates disseminated HIV-associated tuberculosis, tuberculosis-associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS), and cryptococcal meningitis in resource-limited settings. The program extends to drug-resistant tuberculosis diagnostics, novel antiretroviral therapy strategies, and pathogenesis studies through clinical trials and observational cohorts.
Current leadership roles include Chair of the REVIVE trial (azithromycin prophylaxis for advanced HIV), co-PI of the NEW STRAT-TB trial (HIV-associated TB management), and South African national PI for the EFFECT trial (cryptococcal antigenaemia treatment). These initiatives reflect his commitment to translating research into clinical practice across Africa.
His 2018–2024 publications demonstrate consistent focus on HIV-TB co-infection pathophysiology, therapeutic optimization, and diagnostic innovation, with high-impact contributions in the New England Journal of Medicine, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and PLoS Medicine.
Professional recognition includes:
- Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa (FCP(SA))
- Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow (FRCP(Glasg))
As Principal Investigator for multiple NIH- and Wellcome Trust-funded trials, he directs research examining disease pathogenesis and treatment strategies. His work integrates laboratory and clinical investigations through collaborations with African and international institutions.
He leads a multidisciplinary research group conducting clinical trials, cohort studies, and translational pathogenesis research, with active partnerships on TB/HIV pharmacokinetic studies across sub-Saharan Africa.
