Tom Harrison is Professor of Infectious Diseases and Medicine at St George's, University of London, where he serves as Deputy Director of the Institute for Infection and Immunity and Lead for the Centre of Global Health. He is also Honorary Consultant at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Trained at Christ's College Cambridge and St George's, he completed NIH/Fogarty-funded research at Boston University studying host defenses against Cryptococcus.
His research program focuses on:
- Pathogenesis and management of cryptococcal meningitis
- Simplification of tuberculosis treatment regimens
- Implementation of cryptococcal antigen screening in HIV care
Professor Harrison leads multinational clinical trials including the EDCTP-funded AMBISOME trial comparing liposomal amphotericin regimens and the MRC-funded RIFASHORT trial testing high-dose rifampicin for tuberculosis. His laboratory investigates pathogen evolution and host immunity in cryptococcal infection, aiming to develop novel therapeutic approaches.
He maintains advisory roles with WHO, IDSA, and Southern African HIV Clinicians Society, and serves as Adjunct Member at the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine, University of Cape Town.
