Graeme Hayes is a Reader (equivalent to Associate Professor) in Sociology and Policy at Aston University, specializing in social movements, civil disobedience, and socio-legal aspects of protest trials. He previously held roles at the University of Wolverhampton and Nottingham Trent University before joining Aston in 2007. From 2018 to 2024, he served as Head of Sociology and Policy. His research focuses on judicial processes involving activists, particularly the interplay of voice and power in courtrooms.
Education: BA in Modern European Studies (Loughborough University, 1989); PhD in Political Opportunity Structures and Environmental Protest (University of Manchester, 2000), awarded the Walter Bagehot Prize (2001). He has edited leading journals, including Environmental Politics (2016–2023) and Social Movement Studies (2009–2017).
Research Interests: Disobedience tactics, legal frameworks of protest, Extinction Rebellion, and the socio-legal analysis of criminal trials of activists. His work examines how judicial settings shape activist narratives and power dynamics.
