Professor Brian Doherty is a Professor of Political Sociology and Director of Internationalisation at Keele University's School of Social Sciences. He has been at Keele since 1991, following a PhD from Manchester University on Green Party ideologies. His research focuses on radical environmental movements, transnational activism, and the political dynamics of organizations like Friends of the Earth International. He has secured ESRC funding for projects on environmental direct action and transnational NGO strategies.
Education: BA (Politics, Durham University), MA (Politics, University of Kent), PhD (Manchester University). His teaching includes modules on political theory, environmental politics, and social movements.
Research highlights include analyzing the internal politics of Friends of the Earth International, studying Extinction Rebellion and climate activism, and examining protest tactics in the UK and France. His work emphasizes transnational solidarity, post-political conditions, and the role of legal systems in activism.
