Grace Han serves as an Assistant Professor in the School of Art at the University of Manitoba. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of personal identity and cross-cultural communication, shaped by her journey as an immigrant from South Korea to Canada. Han's work bridges traditional Korean ceramic techniques, particularly Onggi, with contemporary artistic expressions, creating a unique visual language that addresses the complexities of belonging and self-expression.
Education:
- Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Dankook University, Seoul, South Korea, where she specialized in traditional Korean ceramic techniques.
- Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the University of Manitoba, Manitoba, Canada.
Research and Creative Practice: Through a diverse array of ceramic techniques—including throwing on a kick wheel, mould-making, slip-casting, hand-building, and Onggi-making—Han investigates the multifaceted nature of identity. Her large-scale Onggi works, requiring significant physical labor, contrast with the repetitive creation of small porcelain objects, both functional and non-functional. This duality reflects her navigation between cultural expectations and personal authenticity, positioning her artwork as an honest medium for direct conversation with audiences.
Honors and Awards:
- Selected as an NCECA Emerging Artist
- Recipient of the NCECA Helene Zucker Seeman Fellowship for Women
Professional Engagement: Han has been supported by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Manitoba Arts Council, and Winnipeg Arts Council. Her active participation in the art community includes international residencies, conference presentations, hands-on workshops, and artist lectures, demonstrating a commitment to sharing her practice and fostering dialogue.
