Gottfried Baier heads the Institute of Cell Genetics at the Medical University of Innsbruck and the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Pharmacological Cancer Immunotherapy since 2009, driving cutting-edge research in immunological therapeutics.
His academic foundation includes molecular biology and microbiology studies at the University of Innsbruck, advanced specialization in biochemistry and molecular cell biology at the Max Planck Institute in Berlin, and postdoctoral training at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology in the USA.
Dr. Baier's research centers on molecular mechanisms of T lymphocytes, autoimmunity, and cancer immunity, with landmark discoveries of the PKC/Cbl-b and PKC/NR2F6 signaling pathways that regulate cancer immunity. His work pioneers innovative immunological therapeutic concepts, particularly synthetic cancer immunotherapy.
Major recognitions include:
- ERC Proof of Concept Grant 2022 for synthetic cancer immunotherapy development
- ERC Proof of Concept Grant 2024 advancing pharmacological cancer immunotherapy
As director of both research entities, he leads multidisciplinary teams developing pharmacological interventions while mentoring emerging scientists in immuno-oncology. His laboratory bridges fundamental cell genetics with clinical translation, focusing on T-cell signaling pathways for next-generation immunotherapies.
