Gordon Schiff

Gordon Schiff serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Quality and Safety Director for the Harvard Medical School Center for Primary Care. He concurrently holds the position of Associate Director at Brigham and Women's Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice.

Dr. Schiff's research program centers on diagnostic safety and error prevention, with extensive work in medication safety systems, health information technology integration, and laboratory-pharmacy communication pathways. His scholarship focuses on developing practical tools to reduce diagnostic pitfalls and improve outpatient safety through systematic process redesign.

His major initiatives include directing the AHRQ-funded PROMISES project for outpatient malpractice reduction, the CEDAR medication safety HIT project, and two Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation initiatives: the PRIDE Learning Network for diagnosis safety improvement and a conservative prescribing optimization program. He previously led Chicago's Cook County Hospital quality improvement committee and edited the seminal text Getting Results: Reliably Communicating and Acting on Critical Test Results.
