Gordon Mantler

Gordon Mantler is an Associate Professor of Writing and History at George Washington University's Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. Currently on sabbatical, he specializes in 20th-century U.S. social justice movements, multiracial coalitions, public history, memorialization, and writing pedagogy in history education. He holds a PhD and has authored award-winning books, including The Multiracial Promise (2023) and Power to the Poor (2013). His research explores Chicago's multiracial politics under Harold Washington, labor activism, and the intersection of race and urban development.

Dr. Mantler’s teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, offering courses like Freedom Struggles in Black and Brown and Writing Race, Filming History. His work has been supported by major institutions including the Mellon Foundation, ACLS, and the National Humanities Center. He is currently investigating activism, labor, and memorialization in Washington, D.C. Recent accolades include awards from the Organization of American Historians and Illinois State Historical Society.

His publications span historical analyses of civil rights coalitions, Chicano movement dynamics, and neoliberal challenges in higher education. Mantler’s scholarship bridges academic rigor with public engagement, advocating for equitable community investments and critical historical narratives.
