Elisabeth Armstrong is a Professor of the Study of Women & Gender and Co-director of the Community Engagement and Social Change Concentration at Smith College. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from Brown University and a B.A. from Pomona College. Her research focuses on transnational feminist movements, anti-imperialism, and Marxist feminist theory, with emphasis on historical movements like the 1949 Asian Women’s Conference and India’s All-India Democratic Women’s Association.
Her work bridges academic scholarship with community-based activism, emphasizing solidarity and social justice. Notable publications include Bury the Corpse of Colonialism (2023) and Gender and Neoliberalism (2013). She serves on editorial boards for Kohl and Meridians. Courses integrate feminist praxis with global struggles over land, labor, and self-determination, often collaborating across disciplines.
Recent scholarship traces intersections of imperialism, capitalism, and patriarchy through feminist movements, while earlier work analyzes U.S. feminist organizational dynamics. Her writing spans historical analysis, ethnographic research, and pedagogical innovation, consistently centering marginalized voices in global struggles for equity.
