Elaine Coburn is Director of the Centre for Feminist Research and Associate Professor in International Studies at York University’s Glendon College. She holds cross-appointments in Sociology, Gender, Feminist and Women's Studies, and Social and Political Thought. Previously, she was a researcher at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and Assistant Professor at the American University of Paris.
Education:
PhD in Sociology (Stanford University), BA in Sociology and Canadian Studies (University of Toronto).
Research Focus:
Her work critically examines neoliberal globalization, social justice struggles, and social theory through socialist feminist, Indigenous, and anti-racist frameworks. Key themes include:
- Decolonizing knowledge systems and epistemic justice
- Intersectional critiques of power structures
- Resistance to settler colonialism and racial capitalism
- Transformative social movements and solidarity politics
Publications:
Coburn’s recent scholarship (2022-2025) prioritizes decolonial, feminist, and anti-racist interventions in political science, sociology, and education. Her articles systematically challenge epistemic domination, neoliberal governance, and institutional exclusion while centering Indigenous resurgence and global South perspectives.
