Gordon Fisher is a Professor in the School of Education's Human Studies department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he also serves as Assistant Dean of Research. His academic appointments include Professor in Human Studies (since 2013), Assistant Professor in Nutrition Sciences, and Senior Scientist positions in multiple UAB research centers including the Nutrition Obesity Research Center, Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and Comprehensive Diabetes Center.
Dr. Fisher's research focuses on developing nutritional and behavioral strategies to reduce metabolic and cardiovascular complications associated with type 2 diabetes, with particular interest in the mechanistic role of mitochondrial bioenergetics and redox signaling in diabetes pathogenesis. His work spans exercise physiology, metabolic disease, vascular health, and innovative telehealth exercise interventions for special populations including wheelchair users and individuals with spinal cord injury.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on high-intensity interval training, vascular hemodynamics, mitochondrial function, and nutritional interventions (particularly beetroot juice/nitrate supplementation) for improving cardiometabolic health. His research demonstrates significant racial and sex differences in physiological responses to exercise and dietary interventions, with particular attention to African American women's cardiovascular responses.
Dr. Fisher serves as an active member of the American College of Sports Medicine, American Physiological Society, and The Obesity Society. He is an ad hoc reviewer for numerous journals including Obesity, Journal of Gerontology, and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and serves on editorial boards for PLOS One, Journal of Sport and Human Performance, and Obesity: Open Access.
His teaching philosophy emphasizes providing students with knowledge, skills, and leadership to succeed in their fields, with particular focus on keeping up with current research in exercise physiology. He has served on multiple graduate thesis committees and teaches various courses in physiology and kinesiology.
Dr. Fisher leads several NIH-funded research projects including telehealth exercise interventions for wheelchair users (funded by National Institute of Child Health and Human Development), high-intensity interval training for spinal cord injury (funded by National Institute of Nursing Research), and research on race-adiposity interactions in insulin sensitivity (funded by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases).
