Prof. Gonneke Stevens is a Professor of Adolescent Health & Wellbeing at the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science, Utrecht University, within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. She holds a PhD in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from Erasmus MC/Sophia, Rotterdam (2004), and completed her BA and MA in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences at Utrecht University (2000). Her research focuses on the Dynamics of Youth (DoY), particularly addressing mental health disparities among adolescents, migration backgrounds, and the role of societal factors such as schoolwork pressure, socioeconomic status (SES), and cultural context.
Her expertise includes interdisciplinary education and cross-national studies on adolescent well-being. Key research themes involve examining how school and neighborhood characteristics influence mental health, analyzing the impact of social and cultural factors on immigrant youth, and investigating the effects of the pandemic on adolescent development. Stevens has also contributed to studies on bullying, social media use, and policy approaches to child poverty, emphasizing a child rights-based perspective.
