Dr. Gonenc Uysal is a Lecturer in International Political Economy at Lancaster University's Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion. He joined the university in October 2022, bringing prior teaching experience at Osmaniye University (Turkey) and King's College London. His academic background includes a PhD (2016) and MA (2010) in War Studies from King's College London, and a BA (2009) in International Relations from Bilkent University (Turkey).
His research focuses on International Political Economy and the Global South, emphasizing critical development studies, historical sociology, and Marxist approaches. Key areas include state-military-society relations in Turkey, Turkey's foreign policy toward Africa and MENA, and anti-colonial struggles. Current projects explore late development, world capitalist system contradictions, and war-revolution dynamics.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on International Political Economy (PPR.295), Political Economy of the Global South (PPR.329), and Development and the Global South (PPR.438). His publications span books, journal articles, and book reviews, including his 2024 monograph on Turkey's military interventions and analyses of sub-imperialism in African contexts.
Dr. Uysal's work critiques neoliberalism, imperialism, and dependency theory while advocating for critical political economy frameworks. His research often intersects with state theory, class relations, and resistance movements in the Middle East and Africa.
