Glennys Young is a Professor and Chair of the Department of History at the University of Washington, with a joint appointment at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. Her expertise spans Russian/Soviet history, transnational movements, and global communism. She holds a Ph.D. (1989) and M.A. (1983) from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. (1981) from the University of Pennsylvania.
Her research explores the USSR’s role in transnational political, social, and cultural processes. Key works include Power and the Sacred in Revolutionary Russia (1997), awarded an Honorable Mention for the Hans Rosenhaupt Prize, and The Communist Experience in the Twentieth Century (2011). Her current project, Refugee Worlds: The Spanish Civil War, Soviet Socialism, and Memory Politics, examines the global impacts of Spanish refugees in the USSR during the Cold War, analyzing their trajectories through archival research in Russia, Spain, and beyond.
Teaching focuses on Cold War history, Soviet rise/fall, and global communism. Notable courses include JSIS B 340 (The Cold War) and HSTEU 548 (Field Course in Soviet History). She currently is not accepting new graduate students for 2025-2026.
