Glen Retief is an Associate Professor of English & Creative Writing at Susquehanna University, where he also serves as Program Director of GO South Africa. A South African native who emigrated to the U.S. in 1994, he holds a PhD in English from Florida State University, an MFA from the University of Miami, and two bachelor's degrees from the University of Cape Town (BA in English and BA Honors in African Studies). His acclaimed memoir The Jack Bank won a Lambda Literary Award and was named an Africa Book Club Book of 2011.
Retief's research spans creative nonfiction, postcolonial literature, LGBTQ+ studies, and African cultural criticism. His work frequently explores intersections of identity, violence, and social justice within apartheid and post-apartheid contexts. His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with trauma narratives, cross-cultural pedagogy, and queer experiences across geographical boundaries.
