Dr. Giuseppina Arbore serves as Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and Researcher in Immunology at the IRCCS San Raffaele Institute's Division of Immunology, Transplantation and Infectious Diseases (DITID). She leads research at the intersection of biochemistry and immunology with a focus on tumor immunology and autoimmune diseases, collaborating extensively with clinical departments including the Gastroenterological Surgery Unit.
Education:
- PhD in Immunology, King's College London (2016)
- Master's Degree in Medical Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine, University of Bari Aldo Moro (2010, 110/110 cum laude)
- Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, University of Bari Aldo Moro (2008, 110/110 cum laude)
Dr. Arbore's research centers on the molecular and biochemical mechanisms regulating immune responses in autoimmune, infectious, and tumor diseases. Her work particularly investigates the role of the complement system ("complosome") in immune cell regulation, T and B lymphocyte biology, and immune responses against esophageal cancer. She employs advanced techniques in cellular immunology, molecular biology, and metabolic profiling to uncover novel therapeutic targets. Her laboratory focuses on characterizing immune responses in tumor microenvironments and autoimmune conditions, with particular attention to how metabolic pathways influence immune cell function.
Analysis of Dr. Arbore's publication record reveals a consistent trajectory in immunometabolism and tumor immunology, with increasing focus on clinical translation in recent years. Her 2023-2024 publications demonstrate sophisticated spatial analysis of tumor immune landscapes and clinical correlations between pre-existing immunity and treatment response in esophageal cancer, indicating her research is moving toward precision medicine applications while maintaining strong foundational work in complement-immune system interactions.
Scientific Awards:
- PNRR Young Researcher MSCA (2022-Present)
- My first AIRC grant (2021-2022)
- L'Oréal UNESCO for Women in Science Italy (2020)
- Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (2018-2020)
- EMBO Long-term fellowship (2017-2018)
Dr. Arbore actively contributes to scientific community service as a reviewer for immunology and oncology journals and serves on the organizing committee for the annual "Milan Meets Immunology" congress. Her research is supported by competitive grants including the PNRR Young Researcher MSCA program and previously by the Marie Curie Fellowship and EMBO fellowship, demonstrating sustained funding success throughout her career. She maintains active collaborations with clinical departments at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, particularly in gastroenterology and surgical oncology.
Based at the Experimental Immunology Unit within DITID, Dr. Arbore's research team works at the forefront of tumor immunology and complement system research. She participates in the Milan immunology research network and collaborates with multiple European institutions, leveraging her international training background from King's College London and the Babraham Institute. Her laboratory combines basic immunological techniques with clinical sample analysis to bridge molecular discoveries with patient applications.
