Silvio Danese

Silvio Danese is a Full Professor of Gastroenterology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and Director of the Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at Istituto Clinico San Raffaele, Milan, Italy. Previously, he served as Director of the IBD Center at IRCCS Humanitas in Rozzano. His career spans clinical leadership, academic research, and international collaboration in gastrointestinal diseases.

He has pioneered studies on TREM-2 receptors, TRPV-4, and immune-mediated pathways, contributing to novel therapeutic strategies like RNA-based nanoparticles and pro-resolving lipid pathways.

His 2025 publications highlight advancements in endoscopic surveillance for IBD-associated cancer, probiotics application in colitis, and therapeutic targets using precision medicine. Recent work also addresses clinical trials for Crohn’s disease treatments (e.g., filgotinib) and endoscopic techniques for fibrotic lesions.

Danese has directed major research initiatives funded by the European Community, NIH, Broad Foundation, and Italian Ministry of Health, including a €15.5 million Horizon 2020 grant for the ImmUniverse project. He serves as Past President of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO) and coordinates multidisciplinary teams in immunology, gastroenterology, and oncology.
