Gisa Weszkalnys is a Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology at the London School of Economics (LSE), joining in 2012 after completing her BA and PhD in Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and teaching at the University of Exeter (2009-2012). Her work bridges urban planning, resource extraction, and temporal studies, with a focus on Europe, the US, and Lusophone Africa.
Her research explores how future imaginations shape material and cultural landscapes, particularly in energy sectors and urban development. Notable publications include Berlin, Alexanderplatz: Transforming Place in a Unified Germany (2010) and Elusive Promises: Planning in the Contemporary World (2013, co-edited). She is currently writing a monograph on offshore oil exploration in São Tomé and Príncipe.
Weszkalnys has held a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2012-2013) and collaborated on interdisciplinary projects like the ESRC-funded Fraying Ties? study. Her recent work examines energy transitions, including soundwalk interventions in Aberdeen.
She mentors PhD students and postdoctoral researchers focusing on energy-related ethnography, regulatory frameworks, and post-carbon economies. Collaborations include projects with curators and sound artists to explore energy transition narratives.
