Girish S. Agarwal is a University Distinguished Professor at Texas A&M University, with affiliations in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and the Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering. He holds academic ranks including Professor and has held prior positions such as Noble Foundation Chair and Regents Professor at Oklahoma State University. Born in 1946 in Bareilly, India, he earned his B.S. from Gorakhpur University (1964), M.S. from Banaras Hindu University (1966), and Ph.D. from the University of Rochester (1969). His research focuses on quantum optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, and nanophotonics, with notable contributions to quantum metrology and photonic technologies.
Key achievements include authoring the textbook *Quantum Optics* (2012) and pioneering works on spontaneous emission theories and quantum light applications. Agarwal has received prestigious awards such as the Max Born Award (1988), Humboldt Research Award (1997), and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1982). He has served on editorial boards of journals like *Physical Review A* and held guest professorships globally, including at the University of Stuttgart and Max-Planck Institutes.
His research interests span quantum sensing, entanglement applications, and photonics-based imaging. Collaborations include developing quantum-enhanced biosensors and exploring nonreciprocal photonics. Agarwal's work bridges theoretical and applied physics, addressing challenges in quantum technologies and fundamental optics.
