Giovanni da Legnano (c.1320–1383) was a prominent jurist, professor of canon law at the University of Bologna, and papal vicar under Gregory XI and Urban VI. A Milanese scholar, he arrived in Bologna in 1350, becoming a key figure in its political and academic spheres during the tumultuous 14th century. He taught canon law from 1351 and authored influential treatises on law, theology, and political philosophy.
His diplomatic work earned him the title of Count Palatine from Emperor Charles IV (1368). Giovanni mediated between Bologna’s independence movements and papal authority, serving as papal vicar despite not being a cleric. He supported the Roman papacy during the Western Schism through canonical and theological writings, cementing his legacy as a leading medieval dialectician.
