Giovanni Pietro Basile, S.J. is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Philosophy Department at Boston College. He holds advanced degrees in Physics, Theology, and Philosophy from institutions including Università della Calabria, Centre Sèvres (Paris), and Ludwig-Maximilians Universität Munich (LMU), where he earned his PhD and Habilitation. His research focuses on the History of Modern and Contemporary Philosophy (Kant, Paul Ricoeur, Karl Jaspers) and Systematic Philosophy including Metaphysics and Philosophy of Religion.
Basile’s scholarly work includes two monographs and editorship of volumes like Perspectives on Kant’s Opus postumum (2022) and System and Freedom in Kant and Fichte (2022). He serves on the Reviewers Panel for Gregorianum and Kant-Studien. His recent research explores themes like failure in Ricoeur’s interpretation of Jaspers’ existential philosophy and Kant’s later works, engaging with both historical analysis and systematic metaphysical inquiry.
He maintains active participation in international Kantian studies, contributing to conferences such as the 15th International Congress of the Society of Kantian Studies in French (2021). His teaching includes courses on Kant’s system, 20th-century tragic concepts, and Jaspers’ philosophy.
