معرفی
Giovanni Ghione is a Full Professor in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (DET) at the Polytechnic University of Turin (PoliTO) and a member of the PhotoNext Interdepartmental Center for Applied Photonics. Having served as a professor since 1990, he has established himself as a leading researcher in electronics with extensive contributions to his field.
His primary research focuses on high-frequency electronics and optoelectronics, specifically modeling electronic and optoelectronic devices on compound semiconductors, passive components, wide-gap semiconductors (GaN and SiC), fast photodetectors, electro-optic and electro-absorption modulators, and plasmonic modulators. With over 300 research papers and five monographs published, Professor Ghione's scholarly output demonstrates remarkable depth and consistency in semiconductor device physics.
His recent publications (2023-2024) reveal continued leadership in photodetector design, HgCdTe infrared technology, and microwave circuit analysis. The research spans multiple applications from high-speed optical communications to infrared detection systems, reflecting his broad expertise across electronics and photonics subdomains with strong emphasis on both theoretical modeling and practical device implementation.
- IEEE Life Fellow (2007)
- Editor in Chief of IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices (2016-2022)
- VP Publications of IEEE Electron Device Society (2024-2025)
- President of Italian Electronics Society (2019-2021)
Professor Ghione has advised numerous PhD students working on cutting-edge research topics including UV-LEDs, silicon photonic integrated circuits, and VCSEL modeling. He has secured significant funding through multiple European and Italian research projects, including Energy ECS (2021-2024) and Smart3D (2018-2021), demonstrating his ability to lead large-scale collaborative research initiatives.
He directs the Microwave and Optoelectronics Group (MOG) at PoliTO, which conducts research across semiconductor devices for microwave power applications, high-speed switching, noise simulation, and photonic integrated circuits, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, and 17 through energy-efficient electronics and photonics technologies.
