Dr. Giotis Charilaos is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology, University of Ioannina. His research focuses on plant photosynthetic physiology, particularly the effects of atmospheric changes on plant macroevolution and climate change impacts on vegetation. He leads the Research Laboratory of Functional Plant Biology, investigating topics such as stomatal conductance responses to elevated CO₂, carbon sequestration technologies, and plant water-use efficiency. His work bridges experimental biology with paleobotanical reconstructions, contributing to global climate change mitigation strategies.
Key research areas include:
- Photosynthetic plasticity under varying O₂/CO₂ ratios
- Stomatal regulation mechanisms in woody angiosperms
- Genetic engineering of plants for enhanced CO₂ assimilation
- Long-term CO₂ trends and their ecological implications
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Plant Anatomy and Morphology, and Plant Physiology. His lab's findings have been published in high-impact journals, with recent studies addressing topics like cyanobacterial gene expression in Arabidopsis and stomatal conductance patterns across bioclimatic zones.
