Charilaos Yiotis is an Assistant Professor in Plant Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Ioannina's Department of Biological Applications and Technology. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from the University of Patras and has conducted postdoctoral research at Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin, focusing on plant responses to atmospheric changes and evolutionary physiology. His research explores plant-environment interactions, particularly under climate change, including stomatal conductance, CO2 effects, and paleoatmospheric reconstructions.
Education: B.Sc. Biological Sciences (University of Patras), Ph.D. Plant Physiology (University of Patras), Certificate in Project Management (University College Dublin).
Research Interests: Climate Change impacts on plant physiology, stomatal and photosynthetic adaptations, evolutionary plant responses to atmospheric O2/CO2 shifts, and paleoatmospheric reconstruction using plant traits. His work bridges modern physiology with ecological and evolutionary contexts.
Recent Articles: Focus on CO2-driven plant responses, tropical tree water-use efficiency, and anatomical photosynthesis mechanisms in stems. Notable contributions include studies on grass transpiration under elevated CO2 and carnation stem photosynthesis efficiency.
- Scientific Awards: Multiple grants including the Irish Research Council's Futu-rye project and ERC-funded Oxyevol project.
- Grants: Key traits for resilience in grasses (2017–2018), Futu-rye (2016–2018), and evolutionary O2/CO2 studies (2015–2016).
Labs/Teams: Leads research on plant-climate interactions, collaborating on global and paleo-ecological studies.
