Dr. Ginger Chu is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Newcastle, Australia, where she commenced her academic career in 2021. She is also an affiliate researcher of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and the University of Newcastle's Priority Research Centre for Asthma and Breathing. Dr. Chu is a member of the Australasian Kidney Trials Network (AKTN) haemodialysis working group and serves as a nurse expert on the global steering committee for the INCH-HD study.
Dr. Chu earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing from the University of Newcastle, a Master of Nursing from the University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Newcastle. She is a Registered Nurse with the NSW Nurses Registration Board and holds a Certificate of Chemotherapy Nursing Practice from Mater Misericordiae Hospital.
Dr. Chu's research focuses on the intersection of sleep disorders and kidney disease, with particular emphasis on chronic kidney disease prevention and management, symptom management for dialysis patients, sleep apnea, and the application of digital technologies in chronic disease management. Her work has identified optimal dialysis models for patients with sleep apnea symptoms, with findings cited in the UK's NICE guidelines. She has pioneered research on sleep hygiene strategies for kidney disease patients and investigates how digital health tools can improve outcomes for those with chronic conditions. Her research program demonstrates a clear trajectory from clinical practice problems to evidence-based solutions that address critical gaps in kidney disease care.
Dr. Chu's scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous awards including the Clinical Research Fellowship from Hunter New England Local Health District (2017), multiple HNELHD High Value Healthcare Awards, and nominations for the College of Health, Medicine, and Wellbeing Early-Career Teaching Award. Her research on dialysis catheter-related infections and sleep disorders in kidney disease patients has received international recognition, including citation in UK clinical guidelines and invitations to national policy discussions with the Australian Department of Health.
As an educator, Dr. Chu serves as Program Convenor for the Master of Nursing program and supervises multiple PhD students across various nursing research topics.
