Her research addresses regulatory frameworks impacting mobile food vending, advocating for policies that enhance social justice and economic opportunities for vendors. Co-authoring the book Social Media and the Contemporary City, she explores how social media transforms urban spaces through case studies like public art installations and social movements. This work employs computational methods (machine learning, natural language processing) and ethnographic approaches (interviews, site analysis).
Wessel's advocacy for vendor rights is highlighted in her 2017 chapter analyzing regulatory conflicts in mobile food vending. She emphasizes municipal investment in public realms and grassroots efforts to achieve equitable urban policies.
