Daniela Sandler

Daniela Sandler is an Associate Professor of architectural and urban history at the University at Buffalo's School of Architecture and Planning. She holds a PhD in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester and a professional degree in Architecture and Urbanism from the University of São Paulo. Her research focuses on social inequalities in urban environments and inclusive city-building through grassroots tactics and policy intersections.

Key research areas include architectural decay's role in social memory (exemplified by her award-winning book Counterpreservation), São Paulo's grassroots urbanism addressing inequality/gender/racial/environmental challenges, and transnational studies of modernist movements and memorialization. She teaches global perspectives on preservation, colonialism, and urban equity.

Her peer-reviewed work addresses public space inclusion in São Paulo, Brazilian modernism historiography, German war trauma memorials, and alternative preservation approaches. She actively participates in research centers focusing on social justice through applied urban studies.
