Ginetta Candelario is a Professor of Sociology and affiliated faculty in Latin American & Latino/a Studies, Study of Women and Gender, and Community Engagement at Smith College. She serves as Editor of Meridians: feminism, race, transnationalism, leading it to win awards and secure its endowment. Her research focuses on Dominican history, Blackness in the Americas, and Latin American feminisms, with notable works like Black behind the ears and Cien años de feminismos dominicanos. She has held leadership roles in organizations such as the National Latin@ Studies Association and the American Sociological Association, and received awards for community engagement. Candelario’s work bridges academic scholarship with community-based initiatives, particularly in Holyoke, MA.
Her academic training includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from CUNY and an A.B. from Smith College. She has directed the Latin American & Latino/a Studies Program and pioneered courses on Hispanic Caribbean communities, earning teaching awards. Her research methodologies include archival work, ethnography in beauty shops and museums, and transnational feminist analysis. Current projects explore Dominican feminist thought from 1880–1961, resulting in a forthcoming book.
Publications span interdisciplinary journals and edited volumes, emphasizing transnational feminisms, racial identity, and decolonial theory. Her editorial work has expanded access to marginalized voices while maintaining rigorous academic standards. Community collaborations include service with Enlace de Familias and the Carlos Vega Social Justice Fund, reflecting her commitment to social justice praxis.
