Christen A. Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where she also serves as Director of the Center for Women's and Gender Studies. Her work bridges cultural anthropology, Black studies, and gender studies with a focus on transnational struggles and resistance.
- Education: Ph.D. in Cultural and Social Anthropology from Stanford University
Her research examines performance, racial formation, and violence in the context of the Black body, particularly in Brazil and the United States. Her publications reveal trends in transnational Black feminist thought, Afro-Brazilian identity, and critical race theory.
Smith co-founded the Cite Black Women initiative in 2017 to highlight Black women's intellectual contributions. Additional affiliations include the Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS), the Warfield Center for African and African-American Studies, and the Center for Women and Gender Studies (CWGS).
She teaches courses such as Global Black Feminisms, Performance, Race, and the Body, and Senior Seminar in Women's and Gender Studies, focusing on race, gender, and liberation.
