Dr. Gina Vale is a Lecturer of Criminology at the University of Southampton, based in the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology. She holds a PhD in War Studies and MA in Terrorism, Security and Society from King’s College London, alongside a BA(Hons) in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Cambridge. Her research adopts a feminist, intersectional approach to terrorism and extremist violence, focusing on topics such as terrorist governance, genocide, extremist propaganda, and the roles of women and children in extremist groups.
Dr. Vale has conducted fieldwork in Northern Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, contributing to studies on internally displaced populations. She is an Associate Fellow of the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) and a member of the VOX-Pol Network of Excellence. Her work has been featured in academic journals like Studies in Conflict & Terrorism and Small Wars & Insurgencies, as well as media including the Netflix documentary World’s Most Wanted.
Teaching responsibilities include modules such as CRIM2011 Comparative Youth Justice and SOCI2039 Culture, Communication & Resistance. She holds Associate Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy. Current research projects include 'Counter-Terrorism and Digital Human Trafficking' and the 'Childhood Innocence?' study on youth radicalization.
Recent professional engagements include speaking at the British Society of Criminology Annual Conference and contributing to UN Action initiatives on survivor support. Her work bridges academic research with practical counterterrorism policy development.
