Gina Ambrosini is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Population and Global Health at The University of Western Australia. She is a registered public health nutritionist and epidemiologist with over 25 years of experience in public health nutrition research spanning both Australian and international contexts, having previously served as a senior scientist at MRC Human Nutrition Research in Cambridge between 2009 and 2014.
Dr. Ambrosini holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from Curtin University, a Master of Public Health, and a PhD from the University of Western Australia. Her extensive educational background has provided a strong foundation for her research career focused on nutrition and public health across multiple life stages.
Gina's research has primarily focused on the dietary determinants of obesity and cardio-metabolic health, particularly in children and young people, and the factors that influence dietary intake in populations. Her work spans several key areas including dietary patterns and their tracking from childhood through adolescence into adulthood, the relationship between nutrition and metabolic health outcomes, and the impact of food environments on dietary behaviors. She has made significant contributions to understanding how early life nutrition affects long-term health outcomes, with particular attention to cardiometabolic markers and obesity development. Her research utilizes sophisticated methodologies including reduced-rank regression for dietary pattern identification and longitudinal analysis of large cohort studies.
Analysis of Dr. Ambrosini's recent publications reveals a strong focus on intergenerational studies examining how dietary patterns established in early life affect health outcomes later in life. Her work frequently utilizes large cohort studies including the European Childhood Obesity Project and the Raine Study. A consistent theme across her research is the examination of how specific dietary components and overall eating patterns relate to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and related health conditions. She has increasingly focused on population-level interventions and policy evaluations, as evidenced by her work on the LiveLighter® obesity prevention campaign and studies of food environment policies in healthcare settings across Western Australia.
Dr. Ambrosini has secured significant research funding from various prestigious sources including the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Healthway, Department of Health (Western Australia), and Cancer Council WA. Her projects span diverse topics from energy drink consumption in adolescents to asbestos-related diseases in Western Australia. She has supervised multiple research students as indicated by the 'Supervised Work (2)' mentioned in her profile, and collaborates extensively with researchers across multiple institutions on complex, multidisciplinary studies.
Her research expertise spans Nutrition, Cardiovascular nutrition, Diet, nutrition, metabolism and obesity, Nutritional epidemiology, Public health nutrition, Obesity, and Childhood obesity, contributing significantly to multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being. Dr. Ambrosini's work continues to inform both scientific understanding and practical approaches to improving population health through better nutrition.
