Gilvan “Gil” Souza is the Haslam Chair in Business and Distinguished Professor of Business Analytics at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business. He holds a part-time professorship at the University of Graz, Austria. Previously, he served at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business (2009–2022) and the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business (2000–2009). His expertise spans sustainable operations, carbon footprint reduction, circular economy strategies, and supply chain analytics.
Education: PhD in Business Administration (University of North Carolina, 2000), MBA in International Business (Clemson University, 1995), and B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering (ITA, Brazil, 1990). Early career included roles at Volkswagen of Brazil in product development.
Research focuses on optimizing supply chains for sustainability. He authored Sustainable Operations and Closed-Loop Supply Chains and co-edited Closed Loop Supply Chains: New Developments to Improve Sustainability. His work emphasizes applied optimization and lean operations, with over 40 peer-reviewed publications.
