Dr. Gillian Fraser is a Senior University Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Department of Pathology at the University of Cambridge. She serves as Official Fellow at Queens’ College and organizes undergraduate biological sciences teaching while supervising Biology of Cells first-year students.
- Senior University Lecturer in Pathology
- Deputy Head, Department of Pathology
- Official Fellow, Queens’ College
- Academic Advisor for undergraduate biologists
Dr. Fraser's research focuses on pathogenic bacterial motility and flagellar assembly mechanisms, particularly the type III secretion systems that enable protein export across cell membranes. Her work investigates how thousands of flagellar subunits self-assemble into functional nanomotors through narrow channels to reach distal assembly sites.
Scientific contributions include:
- Discovery of export signal mechanisms in flagellar subunits
- Chaperone-mediated secretion activation processes
- Engineering bacterial secretion systems for recombinant protein production
- Understanding flagellum growth dynamics
- Elucidating substrate specificity in type III secretion
She leads a research group supervising three PhD students, teaches bacteriology to second-year scientists, medics, and vets, and provides academic development sessions covering scientific writing, critical analysis, and research methodology. Contact: gmf25@cam.ac.uk
