Guy CORNELIS is a Professor at the University of Namur, renowned for his work on bacterial pathogenesis and host-pathogen interactions. His research focuses on Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a zoonotic bacterium transmitted by dogs, and its virulence mechanisms. He has led multiple projects funded by the European Commission - ERC and other institutions, including CANITEST (PCR-based virulence detection in dogs), POC-PICC (human infection prevention), and CAPCAN (genetic analysis of infections).
- Key Affiliations: University of Namur; European Commission - ERC projects
- Research Themes: Bacterial secretion systems, capsular serotyping, canine-human zoonoses, Bacteroidetes protein engineering
His work contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through advancements in infectious disease prevention and diagnostics. Recent projects include surface lipoprotein expression in Bacteroidetes and septicemia of canine origin.
Selected publications highlight his expertise in type III secretion systems, capsular serovar distribution, and novel diagnostic methods. He has supervised 30+ external theses, mentoring researchers in bacterial assembly mechanisms and pathogenicity.
- Notable Supervision: 2012 Thesis on Yersinia injectisome length control; 2011 Thesis on Capnocytophaga genomic lifestyle; 2010 Thesis on secretion system regulation
